Rite of Passage. The ruins of Llanthony Priory, Powys, Wales. A passage to the central yard, now home to baby Swallows, chirping for their food.

The Garden by the River. A secluded and secret little “garden” by the River Honddu, Capel-y-ffin, Wales. There were a couple of these lush little grassy areas along the Honddu. It felt like a cosy secret, as the trees opened up, letting the sun through on just this patch of land, away from everything.

Valley Morning. A crisp and bright morning at Castle Farm, checking out the dancing shadows across the mountains in Valley of the River Honddu.
It’s bright and crisp; silent except for the gentle munching of the sheep grazing the grass. There’s no sound of traffic, there’s no wind; just light and calm.

The Hamlet’s Chapel. This is St. Mary’s chapel in Capel-y-ffin, Powys, Wales. It was here that Eric Gill and a few followers stayed for a few years. During this time, Gill devised many typefaces, including the world-famous Gill Sans typeface, the BBC font.
This place is tiny, but cosy and old.

The Black Mountains of Powys, Wales, near the Brecon Beacons National Park. Shot on my first day of arriving at Castle Farm in Capel-y-ffin. I could’ve shot photos here for hours, watching the sun and clouds cast dancing shadows across the mountains…

Do You Come Here Often? Me and Fie, trekking through the overgrown, untended countryside to get to Mason Woods in Preston, Lancashire. Dodging stinging nettles near your head was an interesting experience…

Deep In The Woods. This is deep inside Mason Wood in Preston, Lancashire. It had been threatening rain all day, but thankfully the thick foliage sheltered me and Fie (and my camera) from the rain. We’ve already had enough rain in June, dammit!
Just past this bridge and up the hill, we met a cheerful Jack Russell. That dog looked like it was having the time of its life.

Get Away From All This. The first shot I took from Saturday’s stroll with Fie. This is the entrance to a flood reserve, literally just off the busy Garstang Road in Preston, Lancashire. I love that you can walk off a main road, scale down a path and are greeted with this.
You can check it on the map here.
We still had a quite trek to go before getting to Mason Wood but I’m glad we took our time to detour. =]

Speaking to the World. So, I totally didn’t know this place existed! This is the long-forgotten amphitheatre attached to the Preston College grounds in Lancashire. Me and Fie went for a walk, past this beautiful place, and through Mason Wood.
Shame that it doesn’t really get used anymore… except, perhaps, for students to hang round the back of it for a cheeky smoke…

Life Stream. After the leaving the Stonyhurst College grounds on the Tolkien Trail, we eventually entered our first forest, representing halfway through the hike. This is the stream you cross upon first entering Over Hacking Wood.
Whilst I was busy setting up a shot of the bridge, the rest of the guys played around this lovely bubbling stream here. After passing through the ancient college grounds and hiking through fields, suddenly entering a forest like this made the experience more magical.
As is the case with my forest shots these days, this is a single exposure, the -1EV one, but I’ve blended some HDR here and there; mainly for textures in the ground and rocks in the stream.
