Boat Mountain.

The Wastwater mountain juts defiantly from the ground as the storm swirls around it…

In the most classic view of the three fells of Wastwater, Yewbarrow is the left one. It is well-known for looking like the upturned hull of a boat and for the prevalence of yew trees on it.

This photo is also the result of a long study I’ve been doing into Jay and Varina Patel’s iHDR workflow and, I have to say, I am extremely happy with the results. The clarity from this workflow is like no other. If you’re looking at ways to blend multiple exposures, you should definitely get yourself a copy of their iHDR webinars!

When Life Is Right.

A perfect duality; the stillness of the eternal Ullswater reflections against the ancient craggy mountains…

Sometimes, you have to choose your moments. Sometimes, these moments are when you’ve just got home from work and decide that the only right thing to do is to change clothes, pick up all your photography gear and head to the monumental lake of Ullswater to shoot some late evening reflection awesomeness. =)

Wrestle of Elements.

A storm stampedes towards the Derwentwater fells, who stand resolute and braced for another battle…

This was shot on the first evening of our Keswick break, right on the Northern shore of Derwentwater looking towards the distant fells. It wasn’t exactly the sunset we were looking for, but still an awesome sight nevertheless. =)

Scafell Fights The Storm.

Humanity gets all the light and warmth whilst the unforgiving craggy mass of Scafell Pike continues its eternal raging battle against the storm sent by the Heavens…

Long Way To Crummock.

Admittedly, our exploration of the more northern Lake District area, on this particular day, was quite ambitious: I had planned the exploration of Honister Pass, followed by a good walk around Buttermere, then Crummock Water and possibly Loweswater… then see if we’d timed the season right to capture the magnificent valley of Rannerdale with its legendary Bluebell carpet.

However, we overestimated the walk from Buttermere to Crummock Water… and possibly took the least accessible route. The pathway was ill–defined with loose rocks and boulders that play havoc with your ankle strength and slow you down. We got as far as here, looking back at the west shore of Crummock Water with Fleetwith Pike in the distance and Mellbreak looming to the right. Fortunately, I had excellent cloud action in the sky and a landscape full of colours and light. =)

Also, I’m experimenting with new and somewhat different post-processing techniques… and I’m liking the results I’m getting!

Gorse And The Lake.

A gorse bush holds its flowers up high but not as high as the mighty mountains surrounding Wastwater…

The lake, Wastwater, takes up most of the floor of the valley of Wasdale, and also takes its name from the valley too. “Wasdale” comes from Old Norse again Vatnsdalr meaning “valley of the water”. Wastwater is England’s deepest lake and is surrounded by England’s tallest mountains, peaking at Scafell Pike, which stands at 3,209ft. =)

Wilderness Mine.

Gatesgarthdale Beck that flows from the 1,167ft summit of Honister Pass down towards Buttermere. Recent rain made this normally timid beck rather more active and you’ll see these giant boulders and chunks of slate all down the beck, filtering the water; it was remarkably clear… made me want to take a sip out of it.

In the distance you can make out the winding single–track road that leads up to the summit Honister Pass where the Slate Mine is. Such a ridiculously epic scene, especially when stormy clouds like these visited us! =)

Warmth Over Silverdale.

Well, this is a nice thing to wake up to a Saturday morning: 10,000 followers on Google+! I am humbled… how did this happen? Anyhoo, thanks to all those who have Circled me on Google+ and enjoy my work… you make it all worth while. =)

As a present, please enjoy this photo: this is the shore at Silverdale, Lancashire. Me and Lisabet enjoying the sunset on the last evening of our break. The Silverdale shore has lots of delicious grassy and rocky textures that make it a veritable composition playground for the likes of me. Add in a calm bay, a soft sky and delicious sunbursts and you’ve got a Happy Hex. =D

The name “Keswick” itself comes Old English “cēse” meaning cheese and “wīc” meaning place or dwelling. In essence, Keswick means “a farm where cheese is made” and has the same roots as London’s “Chiswick” but with more Scandinavian roots.

It’s lovely to see how far such a wonderful place has come. =)

Unity On The Water.

On the last full day of our Keswick break, me and Lisabet made our way towards the tiny fell hamlet of Watendlath. But on the way, I espied through the trees gloriously clear reflections on Derwentwater, the kind I’d been looking for all week! We soon found a parking spot, leapt out of the vehicle, and started shooting all down the south and east shore of the lake, marvelling at the stillness of the water, the calm of the early morning and the colours all around us. =)

Valley of Plenty.

For time, it has been a Life Goal of mine to fully explore and photograph one of Britain’s most beautiful, epic and favourite scenes. Recently, I had the opportunity to do so. Welcome to Wastwater, officially Britain’s Favourite View.

During our break in Keswick, me and Lisabet took the opportunity to head right around the west coast of Cumbria to get to this ridiculously epic place and spent an entire day wandering up and down the lakeshore, shooting photos galore and drinking in the calm, timeless atmosphere. This photo was shot towards the end of the day, near the South-East foot of the lake and Wasdale valley. The peaks you can see are, from left to right: Yewbarrow, Great Gable and England’s highest mountain Scafell Pike.

Yes, the lake water really was that blue. In fact, I had to tone the blueness of the water down in processing! =)

Taming The Terror.

Welcome to Honister Pass. Me and Lisabet have gone through mountain passes before, such as Kirkstone Pass, but navigating Honister Pass is a much more terrifying experience. Kirkstone Pass benefits from being an A-road, that means road markings, barriers and space. Honister Pass is a single track road, no markings, the occasional passing place if oncoming vehicles are screaming down the 25% gradient towards you on your way up the 1,167 feet and there are rarely walls to stop the car falling off the road. Terrifying.

But beautiful! This shot was taken near the summit, atop which sits the Honister Slate Mine, one of the last remaining slate mines in the entire country. Amazing that even in such a terrifyingly unforgiving landscape, man’s influence is still keenly visible.

On the left is the towering ascent of Honister Crag that peaks at Fleetwith Pike near Buttermere, Yew Crag is to the right. =)

Evening Glow.

It seemed that, during our break in Keswick, my Lady’s Blessing struck again: every time she goes on holiday around Britain the weather is always glorious. Of course, I took full advantage of this one evening when we were enjoying the sunset that was happening around Derwentwater near Keswick. As the sun was dipping behind the fells, the colours got more and more intense; I set up my tripod in front of these boats along with a few other photogs who were also enjoying the sunset with me! =)

Portal Above Fleetwith.

Allow me to share with you how my day was: I brewed, and enjoyed, fine Yirgacheffe Beloya coffee, I wandered about around my beautiful hometown of Kendal, I bought and consumed incredible chocolate from The Famous 1657 Chocolate House, I drank wine and I processed photos from our exploration around the North, Central and Western parts of the Lake District. All days should be like this.

Here’s my first release from this trip: this is Buttermere, a lake in the central Lake District. It’s extremely scenic as you can see, with the peak of Fleetwith Pike in the centre sitting at the Southeastern head of the lake, surrounded by mountains. I timed the shot with the movement of the clouds when it appeared that a little sky portal was forming above the summit of the mountain and glowing in the reflections of the lake. =)

Valley of the Boar.

The epic, mountainous, dramatic valley of Grisedale. If you want to know the root of the name, you have to thank our old friends in Norway; “Grisedale” is comprised of two Old Norse words: gris meaning “pig”, or “wild boar” and dalr meaning “valley”. On the left is the distinctive peak of St. Sunday’s Crag.

Glowing Path To The Mountains.

Time was drawing to an end for me and Lisabet when hiking around Rydal Water, but before heading back to the car we came across this path the started to ascend up the fells from the lake shore. The recent rain meant that a small brook had formed and was trickling its way down the path and, with the sun and mountains directly ahead of us, it glowed off the stones and rocks…

Poetry In Reflections.

I can see why English Romantic poet William Wordsworth enjoyed the lake of Rydal Water; it lends itself to easy circumnavigation and there’s a lovely view to be seen every few steps. Fortunately, me and Lisabet were blessed on this day to have excellent light when we shot Rydal Water, and calm water, which gave off these glorious, glowing reflections of the sky, trees and distant fell. =)

Of Stone And Grass.

In all likelihood, as this post reaches your interweb, I am likely to be found on holiday in Keswick, hiking around the Northern and Western areas of the Lake District capturing pure, distilled epicness. Hello!

Until I get back and process the new awesomeness, please enjoy Kentmere valley, as the sun was setting behind the mountains, the grass and distant mountain catching flicks of golden sun, set against the shadowy boulders and rocks…

Parish of the Beloved Son.

It occurred to recently that, though I’ve been living in Kendal for a few months now, I’ve still not got round to shooting, processing and sharing the delights that this historic town has to offer!

So here’s the Kendal Parish Church, Cumbria’s largest one, able to house around 1,200 congregants. It has been a place of worship since the 13th century, though this area has been a place of worship since Saxon times. I enjoy how the towers descend in size and those trees are perfectly placed. =)
